  95.           WORKING WITH JOURNAL.. FIRST THINGS FIRST
  96.           
  97.                 After starting JOURNAL and before entering the MAIN
  98.           MENU, the program requires that you enter the following
  99.           information:
  100.           
  101.                 System Date: This is for your own reference and
  102.                              appears along the top of each program
  103.                              screen during JOURNAL operation. It
  104.                              defaults to the current system date.
  105.           
  106.                 Drive:       The disk drive on which JOURNAL data
  107.                              resides for a given client.
  108.           
  109.                 Client ID:   As JOURNAL allows you to work with any
  110.                              number of accounting journals, it
  111.                              requires that you assign a unique three
  112.                              character code (Client ID) to identify
  113.                              each one. To initialize a new journal
  114.                              simply enter a Client ID which is not
  115.                              being used.

  120.                 This section discusses JOURNAL menus and selections
  121.           available within those menus.

  123.           Introduction to menus:
  124.           JOURNAL is menu-driven. A menu is a list of several choices
  125.           (referred to herein as options) which appear along the
  126.

  143.           to do with JOURNAL involves getting around selection menus.
  144.           Here's how:
  145.           
  146.           To select an option you may:
  147.           1) Highlight the option and press <RETURN> or
  148.           2) Press the first letter of the desired option.
  149.           
  150.           These keystrokes apply to menu selection:

  152.           <Home>        : Highlight leftmost option
  153.           <End>         : Highlight rightmost option
  154.           <RETURN>      : Select Highlighted option
  155.           <Esc>         : Select Rightmost option

  163.           After you enter system information (Date, Working Client),
  164.           you arrive at the MAIN MENU.

  174.           The ACCOUNT MENU
  175.           
  176.                 Options in the ACCOUNT MENU enable you to maintain and
  177.           update the client chart of accounts. A chart of accounts
  178.           consists of a list of 15 character account titles, each
  179.           assigned to a 1-3 digit account code. Code assignment
  180.           simplifies account entry during journal maintenance.

  211.           Maintenance of a client journal manifests itself in two
  212.           JOURNAL editing modes. These are:
  213.           
  214.                 BROWSE MODE
  215.                 ENTRY MODE
  216.           
  217.           BROWSE MODE allows you to search through journal entries on
  218.           file for a particular client. Cursor keys allow you to
  219.           target1 specific entries for change. Keystrokes useful in
  220.           BROWSE MODE are:
  221.                 
  222.           <up cursor>           target entry above current entry
  223.           <down cursor>         target entry below current entry
  224.           <Pg Up>               view screen of entries above current
  225.                                 screen
  226.           <Pg Dn>               view screen of entries below current
  227.                                 screen
  228.           <Home>                target first entry on screen
  229.           <End>                 target last entry on screen
  230.           
  231.           Notes on BROWSE MODE:
  232.           
  233.           o Pressing <Esc> in BROWSE MODE returns to the JOURNAL MENU
  234.           
  235.           o To move from BROWSE MODE to ENTRY MODE, target an entry
  236.             and press <RETURN>. When you switch to ENTRY MODE, you
  237.             will notice that the entire entry appears in reverse
  238.             video, except for the field in which you are entering
  239.             data.

  242.           ENTRY MODE allows you to update information in a single
  243.           journal entry, targeted as described above (see BROWSE
  244.           MODE). Entries consist of five fields which may be updated
  245.           by targeting the field and entering valid data.

  249.                         2)      Transaction/Check number (numeric)

  253.           A "targeted" entry is one in which the descriptor block for
  254.           an entry (either a number or [ADD]) is highlighted. I use
  255.           this term rather than highlight, as highlighting an entry
  256.           suggests that the entire entry appears in reverse video,
  257.           which is not the case.

  294.           Notes on ENTRY MODE:

  296.           o The cursor will automatically advance to the next field
  297.             when a field is filled to capacity.

  299.           o Numbers are assigned automatically to New Entries
  300.             (starting with entry 0).
  301.           
  302.           o New entries may be added by targeting the [ADD] entry and
  303.             pressing <RETURN>.
  304.           
  305.           o Entries may not be deleted, but they may be changed at any
  306.             time.
  307.           
  308.           o The Date Field will default to the Date field last
  309.             entered.
  310.           
  311.           o Transaction numbers are incremented by one as new entries
  312.             are added.

  315.           PRINTING JOURNAL INFORMATION
  316.           
  317.                 JOURNAL has the ability to print two reports. These
  318.           are automatically printed one after the other by selecting
  319.           the [PRINT] option in the JOURNAL MENU. The first report
  320.           lists the journal entries, the second summarizes account
  321.           totals and prints a grand total of all accounts in the
  322.           journal.

  342.                 In JOURNAL, the Escape key <Esc> acts as the universal
  343.           exit key. From any menu, or editing mode, press <Esc> enough
  344.           times, and you will eventually reach a prompt which says
  345.           QUIT?: Select [YES] and you leave JOURNAL.
